The Ramanathapuram Mundu Chilli, also called Mundu Pepper, is a small round variety of Capsicum annuum from Tamil Nadu, India. Prized for its fragrant aroma, slightly tangy fruity notes, and medium heat around 17,500 SHU, it serves as a staple in South Indian cuisine for flavor rather than intense spice. Cultivated for over 200 years, it earned a Geographical Indication tag in 2023.
The Mundu Pepper produces small, plump, spherical fruits roughly cherry-sized with a vibrant rich red color at maturity, starting green when unripe. The moderately thin skin encloses thin walls and numerous small seeds inside. Unlike many hotter Indian chilies, it delivers a distinctive pungent yet rounded aroma with earthy, fruity, and tangy undertones that add complexity and gentle warmth without overwhelming heat. Plants typically grow to 70-90 cm tall and thrive in semi-arid, rainfed conditions with good drought and salinity tolerance. In cooking, these chilies excel in tempering oils for sambar, rasam, chutneys, and dals; they are also ground into powders for curries, pickles, spice blends, and podis, or used as a natural red coloring agent. The variety's unique regional qualities, including its soft pungency and superior flavor profile, led to GI protection in 2023, supporting local farmers and preserving its heritage.

The Mundu Pepper has been cultivated in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu for more than two centuries under traditional rainfed methods. The name derives from the Tamil word for plump and round.
